PAST INITIATIVES

Advancing educational quality, equity, and resilience through collaborative interventions

Whole School Transformation Programme (WSTP)

The Whole School Transformation Programme (WSTP) by SMF was a structured three-year initiative (2017–19) aimed at enhancing school quality across teaching–learning, leadership, governance, and administration. Through an initial diagnostic study and a co-created action plan, schools were guided toward achieving excellence and holistic child development.

WSTP was implemented in three customisable formats: (1) SESQ Assessment & Accreditation, (2) Modular Format with targeted workshops, and (3) Intensive 3-Year Format with long-term mentoring.

The programme reached 25 schools across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, demonstrating its scalability and impact in building sustainable quality systems.

Aksharsetu

Aksharsetu, an initiative of SMF in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra and Zilla Parishad, Amravati (2017–19), focused on strengthening early childhood education and building foundational literacy and numeracy among children aged 3–8 years.

Targeting children of the non-Marathi-speaking tribal Korku community in Dharni block, the programme integrated anganwadis (ages 3–6) and primary grades 1 and 2 (ages 6–8) to create a seamless early learning continuum.

Reaching over 3,000 children, the initiative improved learning outcomes in Marathi and mathematics, increased attendance in anganwadis and primary schools, and enhanced classroom engagement. Early Childhood Education (ECE) practices were established in over half of the participating anganwadis, with storytelling sessions by teachers and local volunteers enriching learning experiences.

Enhancing Civic Engagement (ECE)

The Enhancing Civic Engagement (ECE) programme aimed to nurture responsible, democratic, and socially aware citizens among students in Goa’s primary, upper-primary, and secondary schools.

Implemented in collaboration with the Government of Goa across 108 schools (2017–19), the initiative used action-oriented learning capsules that made civic education engaging and practical.

Focusing on hygiene, sanitation, waste management, and road safety, the programme led to enhanced civic consciousness, improved community participation, and stronger alignment between education and social responsibility. Following its successful implementation, ECE activities were integrated into Mulyavardhan activity books for primary schools and textbooks for middle schools in Goa.

Sahayogi Shikshan Abhiyaan (SSA)

Sahayogi Shikshan Abhiyaan (SSA) was a COVID-19 response initiative launched by SMF in 2020 to ensure continuity in children’s learning during prolonged school closures, particularly in rural and tribal regions.

The programme established 80 Samaj Vidya Kendras—community-based learning hubs—to provide access to education and sustain student engagement when formal schooling was disrupted.

In partnership with local governance bodies, SSA trained Shikshan Sarathis (volunteer educators) to deliver structured, activity-based learning using digital tools and community resources. This approach not only addressed learning loss but also fostered community ownership of education.
